San Francisco, CA, May 17, 2022 – WHILL, Inc., a leading developer and service provider of short-distance mobility, announced today it closed new funding led by a strategic investor Woven Capital, the growth-stage corporate venture capital fund of Woven Planet, a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation. WHILL plans to use the investment to scale production globally as well as to place more emphasis and resources on the service side of its business.

The funding follows successful airport trials of WHILL’s fully autonomous mobility service in the San Jose International Airport (which serves Silicon Valley) in addition to other successful trials in New York, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Grand Rapids, Toronto, Winnipeg and a permanent installment in Tokyo International Airport in Japan.

“We are pleased to have closed this important funding to coincide with our 10-year anniversary,” says WHILL CEO Satoshi Sugie. “WHILL has been creating innovative mobility hardware and software since 2012. Looking to the next 10 years, this funding will help us scale operations to meet growing demand and to provide new services to accelerate innovations in autonomous mobility service at airports, hospitals, and other locations where people need mobility assistance. Both Woven Capital and Woven Planet share our mission and offer unique insights and access to industry leaders to accelerate our journey. This funding opens the possibility of future collaboration between Woven Planet and WHILL’s mobility products and services.”

Michiko Kato, the Woven Capital principal who led the investment, said, “WHILL is transforming a legacy wheelchair industry that hasn’t created real innovation in years. More than 200 million people around the world have difficulty walking, and new mobility solutions can make a tremendous impact in fostering human relationships, boosting health and improving the quality of life. WHILL has led the way with a decade of proven experience delivering innovative mobility assistance solutions and is well positioned to support this important market and help anyone live their best lives through mobility.”

WHILL offers commercial models of short-distance mobility vehicles that are equipped with autonomous driving and anti-collision functions. Facility managers can automatically transport people throughout their facilities by implementing the compatible service package that WHILL offers as a B2B service, which includes a portal that can manage and operate multiple vehicles simultaneously. In addition to improving customer experience and providing convenient transportation services, facility managers can reduce staff load and run safer and more efficient operations.

WHILL offers their consumer models to airports as an option for passengers to navigate the terminal themselves. Tampa International Airport for example utilized 15 units to transport passengers. With this option, passengers have the independence to explore the airport and head to the gate on their own.

WHILL is also in the B2B2C space. For example, the micromobility company Bird is offering rentals in New York City, San Diego, and San Francisco. Through Bird’s main app, users have an option to rent a WHILL.
