Barcelona, Spain, March 28, 2025 – WHILL, Inc., a leading provider of personal transportation solutions, has implemented its autonomous mobility service at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. The service, which launched on March 5, aims to enhance mobility assistance for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) and improve overall customer satisfaction.
WHILL’s autonomous wheelchairs are already in commercial operation at major airports, including Los Angeles International Airport (USA), Miami International Airport (USA), Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (Canada), Rome Fiumicino Airport (Italy), as well as several airports in Japan, including Haneda, Kansai, Narita, and Chubu Centrair International Airports. Additional long-term trials are ongoing at airports worldwide, including Schiphol Airport (The Netherlands).
In Barcelona, PRM passengers departing, connecting, and arriving who want it and adapt to the chair's requirements will be transported to their boarding gates using WHILL’s smart autonomous wheelchairs, which integrate advanced navigation technology. These wheelchairs use sensors and automatic brakes to detect and avoid obstacles, including other people and objects, ensuring a smooth and safe journey. The service supports PRM assistance staff by improving the passenger experience.
Passengers can access the autonomous wheelchairs at designated PRM service stations in Terminal 1 airside (Gates A, B, and C). The PRM service staff sets the destination, allowing passengers to reach their gate without manual operation. This innovation streamlines PRM services and allows for seamless navigation within the airport.
There are currently two units operating. Multiservicios Aeroportuarios has spearheaded this initiative, following a successful pilot project conducted in collaboration with Aena between May and September 2024. The positive outcomes of the pilot led to the commercial implementation of the service, reinforcing WHILL’s commitment to enhancing mobility solutions worldwide.
Established in 2012, WHILL provides personal mobility products and services in approximately 30 countries. WHILL enhances accessibility in locations such as airports, hospitals, theme parks, cruise ships, and convention centers. The company's offerings range from electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters to self-driving devices, designed to give users greater mobility and independence through advanced technology.
