Wheelchair Rental in Japan: WHILL Battery & Range Guide

When renting an electric wheelchair or mobility scooter, one of the most common concerns is the battery. Questions like:

  • How far can I travel on a single charge?
  • How long does it take to recharge?
  • What happens if the battery runs low while I’m out sightseeing?

are completely understandable.

With WHILL, you can travel with confidence.

Our electric wheelchair and mobility scooter are designed to give you the freedom to explore Japan without worrying about battery life.

Let us introduce some of the features that make WHILL’s battery practical, convenient, and ideal for travel.

Battery Specs & Effortless Charging

The WHILL Model F, a lightweight foldable electric wheelchair, and Model R, a portable mobility scooter,

are powered by a high-performance Lithium-ion battery.

  • Weight: 6 lbs (2.7kg) — Light enough to handle with one hand.
  • Charging Time: Up to 5 hours for a full charge.
  • Universal Charging: You don’t need a special station. The provided cable works with any common power plug.
  • Convenience: The battery can be easily removed from the device. This means you don’t have to move the WHILL device over to a plug to charge

Why We Choose a Charging Cable Over a Spare Battery

We often get asked if we offer a second “backup” battery. We intentionally chose not to for one main reason: Your comfort.
Carrying an extra 6 lb battery is heavy and takes up valuable storage space. Instead, we designed our charging cable to be incredibly lightweight.

It’s much easier to bring the lightweight charging cable along and top up the battery whenever a charging opportunity is available.
Many hotels, transportation hubs, and some cafés or restaurants provide accessible power outlets or charging spaces.
Whenever you wish to charge outside your accommodation, we recommend asking a staff member before plugging in your device.
A short top-up while taking a break is often all you need to comfortably continue your sightseeing.

Visualizing the Distance: More Than a Day’s Walk

To understand what 17km (Model R) or 20km (Model F) actually means, it helps to compare it to how much a typical person moves.

The Benchmark: According to travel data and step-tracking trends for major cities like Tokyo or London,
an active tourist typically walks between
12km and 15km (roughly 15,000 to 20,000 steps) on a heavy day of sightseeing.

◆The Tokyo Round-Trip Example:

Imagine you are at Shibuya Station. You decide to drive your WHILL all the way to Tokyo Station (a 7.5km trip through the city).
After a full morning of exploring, you drive the
entire way back to Shibuya.

That total round-trip is roughly 15–16 km.

  • Model R: You can complete this entire journey on a single charge.
  • Model F: You can do the full round-trip and still have enough “reserve” power to explore side streets and shops along the way.

This means you can leave the hotel in the morning, navigate the city all day, and return in the evening without ever worrying about finding a charging port until you’re back for the night.

◆The “Imperial Palace Loop” Example:

A full lap around the famous Imperial Palace moat in Tokyo is exactly 5 km.

  • With the Model R (17km): You could drive three complete laps around the palace and still have enough power to drive to a nearby restaurant for dinner.
  • With the Model F (20km): You could drive four full laps around the entire palace grounds on a single charge.

Whether you are driving from your hotel to a landmark or spending the entire afternoon circling a scenic park,
you have significantly more range than the average person has walking endurance.
You can head out for the day with the peace of mind that your WHILL has more “energy” than even the most active sightseeing group.
